In order to create a double height space, the first floor slab was cut back and the existing outer columns previously restrained by the first floor slab were strengthened with steel plates. However, the slab could not be cut back before the columns were strengthened and; the columns could not be strengthened before the slab was cut back.

Close teamwork between the Engineer and Contractor was required to install an intricate network of temporary works to restrain the columns and support 1st floor slab. Careful sequencing of the works consequently allowed the slab to be cut back safely and the columns strengthened.

The free edge of the first floor was also strengthened with steelwork hidden within the ceiling zone to form an alluring overhang above the reception which also supports the feature stair.

Finally, the ground floor slab was remodelled, strengthened to enclose the former external arcade to form the new reception with a glazed façade.
